Posted October 11, 200717 yr I have a bit of a funny issue. Okay so when I set up my PC in my new place temporary place I found that the wireless router made by Dlink has no password set. This causes me worry as I can't really do anything confidential and that some times my ping jumped up quite a bit making me think someone else was using it also. The other odd thing is that I get 54mps speed. I also have a Netgear wireless router which I also hooked up as I get 108mps when I connect through that. I can password protect my router but how do I get into the Dlink one to password protect it? Also, I will need to reset it for when the people who actually live there come home. I don't want them to come home and find they can't use their own internet. Pretty silly really having two wireless routers hooked up but hey............. My netgear one when I just try and hook it up alone does not work as it needs to be hooked up to the modem so that didn't work. This is the router I have. http://www.netgear.com.au/Products/RoutersandGateways/AGDualBandWirelessRouters.aspx Any wiz kids on, please help! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. October 11, 200717 yr pretty sure you have to use nat negotiation if your hooking your old wireless router to the dlink modem/router, i dont know how to do this exactly so i just use an all in one. you should be able to tap into the dlink one on http://192.168.0.1/ or http://10.1.1.1/ and setup the wireless part (but you've probably already done that if you have setup the internets), you can save settings to a local computer before changing it (well on my dlink modem/router thingie you can) so you can revert them back when you leave. its a very vauge answer but i don't know what exactly your looking at. http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/6989/25156655.jpg
October 11, 200717 yr Author I've got a Dlink wireless routher that I want to password protect. So I use those two and I can set that password then correct? So one of these http://192.168.0.1/ or http://10.1.1.1/ will get me into the router and I can set it up then? After that I'll link it to my Netgear one and connect thtough that as the connection speed is faster. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. October 11, 200717 yr why bother with the extra router. You connect at 54mb to the wireless but your internet speed will be at the absolute most 24mb (ADSL 2+ if your sitting in the exchange) so there is no real point complicating the system. And as stated above - wireless and games is BAD, very BAD http://www.madhouseau.com/misc/sigs/darthsig.jpg
October 11, 200717 yr  Oh, is that your wireless network I'm picking up Smokey? P2P here I come... Where's the cheese? http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/2315/ubd4327.png
October 11, 200717 yr you only ever use wireless when cant put a wire down and what mediace is talking about is the privite ip address 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 idiots are hardcoded
October 11, 200717 yr Author Yeah I know wireless is bad but it was already there so I have no choice. don't you worry when I settle on my property on Nov 26 I will not be getting bloody wireless. I do average 65 to 70 ping so it's not too terrible and I'll live for now. In the layout of this house and where the modem is I have no choice but to use wireless.. So now that I have half my questions answered (thanks all) I need to secure that Dlink modem. Using one of these, 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 I put that into my search bar at the top and that should log me into the router correct? Nothing was set up at all so much so that the network was not even named. When I am not using the internet I have to unplug the modem so that no one can download and slow me down. Thanks again all, as usual you are all a wealth of knowledge! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. October 11, 200717 yr Okay...54mbps will be what the ROUTER itself can send information at over wireless - you will get 100mbps connection if you use a cable. This is not your actual internet connection speed it is the internal network in your house. ie any computer physically plugged into the router or connected over wireless. What kind of internet access do you have? ADSL or cable?
October 11, 200717 yr Author It's ADSL, what company no idea but it is an ADSL router from Dlink. It was already there and running when I moved in. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. EDIT: you answered this question as i posted this (already setup) this makes reseting your modem a very bad idea Edited October 11, 200717 yr by invisible.moose2010 http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/6989/25156655.jpg
October 11, 200717 yr So now that I have half my questions answered (thanks all) I need to secure that Dlink modem. D-Link are normally http://192.168.0.1 but some differ. Look up the page for the model you have on here http://whirlpool.net.au/index.cfm?a=h_models -> "Configuration" section lists the default IP address, admin username and password. DO NOT hard reset the modem - I assume you don't know the password for the connection to the ISP and you won't be getting back on the internet without it. Edited October 11, 200717 yr by Gardenhead
October 11, 200717 yr Author I looked up available wireless networks and to my surprise found 2 that where not password protected. I noticed one said Dlink and the modem was Dlink so I logged in. I then unplugged stuff to ensure that it was actually coming from the router in my appartment (it was) so I was quite happy that I got a few rounds in last night. I think I'll use that other network when I feel like downloading..... That is why I want to secure the one I'm using. Nothing worse than having a game and someone starts downloading or hitting up youtube spiking you to 250 ping. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. October 11, 200717 yr in my experience, DLink usually uses an IP of 192.168.0.1, username of Admin & password as Admin also... If your main worry is security... its the hex key that you should be addressing, if there is no encryption enabled then its a free for all on the network... If you have encryption enabled then no one will be able to acces the router remotely anyway... http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpghttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmp
October 11, 200717 yr Author Hex key? What is it where do I find it or enable it? I just want to secure the line so it's not a free for all and so I can do my banking. There is no encyption enabled at all. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. October 11, 200717 yr Author Okay, so I got in and I have no idea what I'm supposed to do. WEP Hex wtf? What do I need to put in to get 10 hexidecimal digits. I'm confused. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. October 11, 200717 yr Okay, so I got in and I have no idea what I'm supposed to do. WEP Hex wtf? What do I need to put in to get 10 hexidecimal digits. I'm confused. hex is just a numbering system. Normally digits are decimal, ie they go from 0-9. Hexadecimal goes from 0-15. To make it easier just choose a 10 digit number. PS you really be typing, about this, till the cows come home on this one. Give DLink a call if you really want to do this. 1300-700-100. They could set it up in 5-10 minutes for you. PPS Your banking is still safe as it is an encrypted connection. Edited October 11, 200717 yr by DeliciousMaximilian Bushball Victoria
October 12, 200717 yr Author I just want to take the time to thank all of you for your help! After your advise and a bit of trial and error on my part I have now secured my line which has stabalised my ping a bit which is fantasic. I still get spikes which I think is some interference or something. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix that? I will try and set up my Netgear router as I think it sends a stonger signal? If you have any ideas I'm all ears otherwise I'll see how that goes! Once again the community here has been fantastic, thanks again guys! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. October 12, 200717 yr Ping spikes = because you are connecting to the router via wireless. If you use a network cable you will not get this.
October 12, 200717 yr Author In my last house I was forced to use wireless also and I was not getting them. The last place did not have the old thick brick walls or as many wireless options available when I search for networks so I'm not so sure about that. I actually watch the signal strength go from excellent to poor so I'm a bit curious as I did not get that before with the same model router. Weird eh? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. October 12, 200717 yr The connection going Excellent -> Poor -> Excellent indicates interference on the channel (usually from another nearby network on the same channel, could also be something like a cordless phone or a microwave oven) Try changing channels to something up the other end of the scale.
October 12, 200717 yr Changin the channel may help. One thing to consider is wireless really hates metal. It blocks the signal almost completely. If it is a desktop computer position it so the antenna is not blocked by the case. If you want to find out whether ping spikes are really caused by wireless try pinging the router click start click run type cmd (on xp) press <enter> type ping 192.168.0.1 -t (if this is this is the router address) press <enter> Check the numbers they should be pretty low. 1ms-5ms = Absolutely nothing to worry about. October 14, 200717 yr Author I switched to my Netgear Router, the signal is stonger so I'm hoping that will adress my ping spikes. I have my fingers crossed! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake.
