Posted October 5, 200717 yr Okay all here's my situation. I am moving into a temporary place this weekend until November 26th when I can move into my appartment I bought. I need to get internet in there and fast or no one will see me for awhile. Will I be able to get it and transfer it to my new place? Also who should I go with and why? I want fast internet, (as fast as I can get) downloads do not matter too much as I'm not a massive downloader. Please help as I need to call someone today to get it organised. Thanks in advance. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. October 5, 200717 yr Don't know of many broadband plans about with 2 month contracts, you'll be up for exit fees on most (6+ month contracts). Maybe AAPT? http://home.aapt.com.au/At_home/Internet/ Where's the cheese? http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/2315/ubd4327.png
October 5, 200717 yr Equip the shovel and start digging! That cable is somewhere down there! *Vis says - whats a showel ? Edited October 5, 200717 yr by chambersAUS
October 5, 200717 yr I guess we'll be seeing you in a few weeks then Smokey. The only portable internet connection is unwired/Wireless and I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy (or you) lol carpe the living crap out of the diem http://www.kable.net.au/images/signature.jpg
October 5, 200717 yr i dont know your luck of getting anything quick. Most ISP's can bill you straight away but have to wait for TELSTRA to go to the exchange and test the line then enable it and then let the ISP know so they can do their bit. The fastest ive seen this happen is 1 week. Should be able to "churn" you service to another number as long as its compatible but still takes time. http://www.madhouseau.com/misc/sigs/darthsig.jpg
October 5, 200717 yr Author No I don't mind transfer fees. I'll get a year contract and just have it in my temp house for two months and transfer it over to my new pad. Who is good fast and reliable? i dont know your luck of getting anything quick. Thanks Darth, internet has been in there already as there is a modem already there. The signal lights do not come on when you power it up so I need to re-connect it, odd situation. It's my gf dads business partners kids flat. The just picked up and bounced over to Europe so we're moving in until November. I just want to be able to play while I am there and do not mind transfering my internet to my new place. Does that help? October 5, 200717 yr if you know their ISP you could give them a ring and see if its discoonected out just not working. otherwise ring up you isp and see how quickly they can change your current setup to the new number - if there is a number (telstra may have disconnected the line, therfore the internet wont work) http://www.madhouseau.com/misc/sigs/darthsig.jpg
October 5, 200717 yr Might be worth checking if ADSL2+ is available at the termporary place, and also at your new place (if you know where it is!) through the same company. But yeah, 1-2 weeks minimum connection time, whoever you go with. Where's the cheese? http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/2315/ubd4327.png
October 5, 200717 yr Author Nooooooo!! Is ADSL2 better than cable? As in would I be better off getting a foxtel connection in my place and just get someone to reconnect the internet on a no contract rate and use the modem in the house? From first glance it looked like an optus wireless modem IIRC, just saw it last night. Will any modem do or do I need to use the one from the company I get my internet from? Thanks guys you are being really helpfull. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. October 5, 200717 yr Buy a wireless adaptor. I won't say what to do next but I think you can figure it out yourself ADSL2 can be better than cable. ADSL2 is distance dependant whereas cable is not distance dependant. A cable, however, is shared and your bandwidth can be eaten up by say your next door neighbours Manga/Furry porn habit. October 5, 200717 yr Author Damn, I was just set on getting cable now too. I do have a wireless adaptor! Maybe a little hacking is in order. JOKING ADMIN! I don't know what to do........ I was looking at bigpond cable and the price is good and a 30mbps is great. What would be better for international gaming? Which is more stable for speeds on average here in Oz, cable or ADSL2? What company should I avoid? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. October 5, 200717 yr Cable is relatively rare, I believe. You also have to go with either Optus or Telstra Bigpond. Not very good choices. There is no real difference in ping times between the two. For that matter there is not much difference in ping between a 1500k and 20000k connection. With international gaming the main factor is distance and speed of light limitations. It takes roughly 140ms for light to get to The USA and back, in a straight line. Bushball Victoria
October 5, 200717 yr Author Okay, thanks dog. Why are those companies not good choices? So would most of you agree that ADSL2 if I can get it is better? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. October 5, 200717 yr If you can get fibre at your new diggs then wait (i feel your pain) if not then go internode adam iinet or one of the other "premium" isps (node being my prefered isp). You pay a bit more for it but the quality of service and the internal network design is better so you get next to no downtime and the fastest pings available . Also check you can get adsl2 at the new as well as the temp digs if you are going to transfer your connection from the temp digs. Most providers wont charge a fee to go from adsl to adsl2 but will to drop back.
October 6, 200717 yr Author Thanks very much plate my man. I'll check on the fibre, then for my temp as there is a modem there I'll see if I can just gt a no contract connection. I think that may work. Thanks for the tips all, I'm going to start making phone calls! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. October 8, 200717 yr I like Internode. I particularly like my 6ms ping to the armedA servers. People think im an admin. Bushball Victoria

October 9, 200717 yr Author Okay, you've got me decided on the company then. I think there is internet in my place but I have to get the password from the actual tennants. I'll not be able to join you guys for some fragging for a little bit longer. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. October 9, 200717 yr can you get into the router settings ?? if you can then you can usually look on the page that has the connection settings for the isp and where the password is you will see *********** then click on view - page source, for some stupid reason some routers leave the password in there un edited. Worked for me once http://www.madhouseau.com/misc/sigs/darthsig.jpg
October 9, 200717 yr Author OOhh, thanks Darth. I'll set my PC up tonight or tomorrow and see if that works. I will certainly let you know if that works. I wish they just had a regular router instead of a wireless one. http://www.netgear.com.au/Products/RoutersandGateways/AGDualBandWirelessRouters/WGU624.aspx I have my own one of these, can I stick the cord up to it and make the internet work through my router? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. October 9, 200717 yr if you can find the config details from the old router it should not matter what type you have, just need the username and password for the account with the ISP I would be very surprised if they havent cancelled the service though http://www.madhouseau.com/misc/sigs/darthsig.jpg
October 9, 200717 yr Author http://netgear.com.au/Products/RoutersandGateways/AGDualBandWirelessRouters.aspx I have one of these, can I unplug their router and use mine instead?
