Just read a thread on joinsquad I wanted to share. In short; we shouldn't be calling spawn Radio's FOBs...

 

I am very guilty of this. This is an FOB:

 

Forward Operating Bases are huge. If anything, the "FOBs" in Squad are nothing more than a PB or a "Patrol Base"

 

There's info on joinsquad forums about actual FOB logistics being added around V8; they're going to introduce COP's and big-ass FOB building as well. So we're all going to have to change our terminology soon anyway.

 

But atm, I'm going to start calling SL remote spawn points by their actual name: Radios (and everyone is going to be like "what's a radio?" lol)

I guess we just follow the terminology provided by the Devs.. Might be worth hitting them up for a revamp of its definition

I just saw on the forum, people talking about proper FOB logistics from base camps to radio's to create FOB's.

The Radios are referred to as FOBs because eventually that's what they will be - many many versions later.

It'll be changed later on in the future, at the moment from what I know of it is only a placeholder

Once a FOB always a FOB , comes from Project Reality really.

 

My idea of having a FOB is actually to secure a location or point on the map for your team to spawn on, ideally this should be a defended position with ammo, MGs, mortars etc often called a "Super FOB", so squads can retreat to this position if needed to rearm or regroup. Currently it is in the majority mindset to use it as a "secret spawn" with the mentality that I will try and put it somewhere it won't be found. Typically utilising a FOB to draw enemy off a flag or cache location would be more beneficial than having it somewhere the enemy could stumble across it and eliminate it with ease.

We will never have FOB's in squad that are representations of real life. Forward Operating Base's or FOB's in "real life" are in Forward locations for Operations to be conducted from while still having the safety of a Base.

 

In Squad FOB's are for the team to spawn in a Forward location for Operations to be conducted while having the ability to construct defenses and resupply at a forword Base. The Squad devs keep using the terminology of FOB's for team spawns and have even posted a tutorial video on

A bit of an update, seeing people have been picking me up on it both in the forums and IN THE GAME (and Darkbot appears to have taken personal, passive-aggressive umbrance towards it haha ).

 

I tried saying radio for about a week in BigD & some US west coast servers; maybe 1/10 people knew what I was talking about.

 

A couple of people thought I was talking about the squad radio communications and other didn't reply at all (surprise).

 

So maybe this won't work until Offworld decide on a single naming convention (like changing the RADIO menu, or change FOB in the help screen to RADIO. You know, just use one!)

And despite this anecdote that all but one (from both Oz and US servers) didn't understand your adherence to pedanticism- you still think the Squad Devs and members of the community need to change?

I might be way off here, but usually when I join a new game/community I try to learn from the veteran players in it. That's actually one of the reasons I joined [N/A]- to learn.

 

Telling people how to play their game, when there's a 400hrs+ gametime deficit between you and them, strikes me as kind of arrogant mate. But that's me, I have never been that confident.

Veteran Players of Project Reality might be fine with them being called FOB's, But the whole point of my post was that the Radio's we drop in the game share ZERO characteristics with what a Forward Operating Base looks is in real life.

 

And if we want to get really particular about it; the game calls them a Radio in the SL contextual menu. Further to that, since when did Taliban Insurgents have Forward Operating Bases?

 

For the sake of consistency, it is my opinion that Offworld should stop calling the Radio's FOB's, because that term is not accurate for the two of the reasons I've already mentioned.

 

And the "you're a new guy, you're opinion is moot" mentality isn't good for building a community either.

Mate, you're not "at war with the admins" as far as I can see, although your apparent sensitivity to your beliefs being challenged may become an issue (for you) if you take everything to heart.

So I assume you've sent messages/started a thread on the joinsquad forums demanding the Devs make these game altering changes?

What you infer from the responses you receive here is completely up to you, I have no control over your reactions.

 

What? Did you think everyone would agree with your tightly held beliefs?

 

You can call things whatever you want when you're Squad Leading mate, I really don't care and in the grand scheme it doesn't really matter.

 

I'm just trying to point the irrational futility of your endeavor here to attempt to exert influence over a community (and game developers lol) that you:

a) don't really have any influence over

b) isn't really an issue for anyone else as far as I know

 

You don't have to accept my arguments either as they relate to your beliefs - that's your prerogative.
