Hey all,

wow, haven't made a new thread in ages...

Anyway, I was looking for some advice regarding how to get some nice positional audio happening in my headphones.

I currently am using this

With onboard sound (realtek bla bla bla) however recently installed Razer's 'Surround' and loved the positional audio etc, made skyrim, BF3 and RO2 much more enjoyable. The reason why I am creating this thread however is that Razers surround software seems to cause BSOD's / crashes on my computer at random when running either BF3 or RO2 (no such problem yet with Skyrim). I've reinstalled now to see if the problem continues, if It does I will be contacting razer support but i was looking at alternatives.

1. I could purchase an 18$ creative sound card

from msy

2. Buy a set of headphones with built in surround

http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=10762

keeping in mind spending least amount of money would be best.

Has anyone had any experience with the above sound card? (the Creative SB5.1-VX 5.1 PCI Sound Blaster Sound Card)

or possibly this one ("ASUS Xonar DG Sound Card")

Cheers

Hmm, imo your best bet is to avoid buying a "gaming" headset, as they tend to be pretty crappy in terms of build quality/pricey

I highly recommend a soundcard, as they are super cheap. I use the Xonar DG, it's got an inbuilt amp, haven't had any issues with it so far.

I use a pair of Audio Technica A900s. They work great for gaming because they isolate any outside sound (closed ear), and have a srsly impressive sound stage.

I've also got a pair of the AD900s, the open ear variant, and they're good, but there's too much noise in my house to use them for gaming.

I then use a logitech desk mic, but i've heard good reviews about clip-on mics

EDIT: for a smaller budget, i suggest the a700s, worth every penny.. I know Xavo has this pair, maybe he can chime in with some advice

Great, I'll really look into the sound card option now, thanks yak.

Ya, having super sweet sound is less important now in PR, as the new sounds are not as obvious :( It's super hard to hear footsteps etc now

I've got the AD700's (slightly different to the A700's). They're great for the money. Approaching 4 years now I think and not a bad word to say about them.

Bass is a little more subtle than some other headphones of a similar price, but it's really a non-issue as it compliments the soundstage beautifully.

Also they're a fairly rugged design, they seem flimsy but it's copped a couple of years of boarding school and now a couple of years of college. I actually dropped them off my table last night with nothing to show for it.

They sound excellent with Onboard (Dolby home theatre or something) so I'm super curious to see what they'd be like with even a cheap soundcard.

EDIT: Those gamer headsets with all the little phones in each side would not stand up to the same amount of abuse, nor would they have as good a sound stage for the same price.

Wait.. hang on, ive been researching this card, does it emulate surround sound? Because ultimately that is what I am looking for, either through software or soundcard or external USB dongle soundcard.
