Hey chaps, needing some help on virus removal (preferably without a reformat since I have stuff I need + no BF2 disc + I'm in the middle of assessment).

Basically, whenever I do some stuff, like try and play music in media player or watch a movie on youtube/VLC the RAM shoots up to 98% or so (usually hovers around the 35-40% mark with 80 processes running). I open taskmanager and there isn't anything that's using that sort of memory.

Last I remember something that big is GTA4 using it all.

I'm running Avast at the moment, nothing showing up in the logs.

I think I might've picked something up off the college network, probably hiding in a movie or something I reckon.

Any help would be appreciated - will probably reformat this weekend sometime as I really need a cleanup but right now I have too much study & files I need.

I use Avast as well. The problem you describe above appears to be specific to audio-video issues. You may want to check there are not

erroneous services in Task Manager as well. A complete virus scan is

always advisable and if you are compulsive obsessive, use more than one

tool.

With 80 processes running - I would take a wild stab and say there is

some stuff in there which is messing with your media systems...

you could try manually stopping services and then check RAM commitment,

process by process. Or you could reformat... either way, it's a big hassle

and if Avast is doing it's job correctly it should be automatically scanning

files you bring into your system in relation to viruses etc.

Spybot S&D is a handy tool to run every now and then, also.

Thanks for the help guys.

I used MalwareBytes, HitmanPro and Spyware in safemode and all they found was a bunch of tracking cookies.

I uninstalled Avast and installed Microsoft Security Essentials - which seems to be using more resources than avast did (sits at 49% idle instead of 40ish%).

Is it possible my RAM has gone bad or something? 57% resources with 2 tabs of firefox and that's the only program/folder open...

Used the Norton scanner which said my registry is in a bad state.

There's a massive, massive, massive big log - do you want that Devil?

bad RAM , has always blue screened me, as your cpu tries to get something from the RAM and if its not there in the address where it requested it from, Blue screen.

Hmm this is weird then.

It's literally only just sprung up last night, only adware tracking cookies have been found and it does feel like it's using abnormally large amounts.

I just realised I've left my Windows discs back home since I needed to save weight on the plane :(

other thing I would look at is your start up programs, facebook think they can install anything they want. I just use ccleaner to look at such things, but know what your are stopping from running, Google is there use it ;)

Ok, just teasing :p I saw it in your logs...They look fine. Haha :D

Download this: http://www.getsysteminfo.com/download/GetSystemInfo.zip

Before you run it, do whatever you are doing when your memory usage goes up again. Then, click settings and set it to "Maximum" and initiate the scan and post up the log or the link to the analysis (gives it to you at the end).

If this is clear, I reckon your system is clear of a virus.

Are you using a XXXXXXX XXXXXXXXX?

Yeah, but I have been for nearly two years now?

I have two versions, XXX which I don't use anymore and then a XXXXXXXX version of XXX.

Ahoy there shipmates... *cough cough* perhaps some improprieties are best shared less publicly or preferably elsewhere together...

Haha Sandy...You can mod edit his post. I did need to know though, just in case a recently downloaded *patch* was causing the trouble, as they have been known to do :)

Oh and Sandy, Spybot is now pretty much useless :( MalwareBytes is the way to go, if you are trying to remove adware, spyware and other junk.

Edited my post and thanks for your help Devil!

Here's the log from when it was running just under 70% I think - so not the highest it's been, but it hasn't been that high since.

Alright, system looks clean! :)

I reckon what you are experiencing might be caused by a memory leak in a program running.

Do this:

1) Open Task Manager

2) Goto the Processes tab

3) From the menu bar select View > Select Columns ...

4) Add "Handles" and "I/O Writes" then rank the handles column and then I/O writes.

Report back :)

EDIT: I think I found the culprit! Try this: http://www.mydigitallife.info/how-to-disable-windows-7-media-player-network-sharing-service-wmpnetwk/
